SAF HELICOPTERES’ first vocation has always been mountain rescue. In 1979, Roland FRAISSINET, who was very concerned about the rescuing of people in danger and the potential of helicopters in the mountain area, created the SECOURS AERIEN FRANCAIS. In conjunction with the mayors of the mountain towns, the French Civil Protection direction and all authorities he constantly strove to develop aerial rescue.
Motivated by Roland FRAISSINET’s example and by the impetus he gave to aerial rescue, SAF’s personnel aim at keeping his work alive and work every day for the population’s well-being. Hence, since1989 SAF HELICOPTERS has largely developed its actions of rescue and Civil Protection in conjunction with the authorities:
 - Mountain rescue
- SAMU (Emergency Medical Service)
- Med-evac flights
- Fire fighting
- Preventive avalanche release
